emdr trauma therapy

A lighthouse overlooking calm seas, representing how trauma therapy restores emotional calm.

How EMDR Works

One way the mind heals trauma is during sleep, especially during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing treatment (EMDR) uses rapid eye movement to achieve healing the same way you heal when you sleep.  Eye movements like those when you dream are recreated.  Because you are encouraged to choose what to think about during the rapid eye movement session, the traumatic emotional memories you choose become less disturbing.  With repeated sets of eye movements, memories become neutral and lose their triggering intensity, and anxiety symptoms and triggers are reduced.
